EUROPEAN SYMBOLS
These symbols were introduced in 1985 at the European communities in Milan. These symbols aim to create more unity between the population of the European union.
I-The Flag
It consists of 12 golden stars forming a circle on a blue background. The stars and the shape don’t represent the numbers of members but the completeness and the unicity while the blue color represents the West.
II-The Currency
Used by most European countries, the euro is the most tangible sign of unity between the countries.
III-The Day
In commemoration to the Schuman Declaration, the Europe Day takes place on May, 9th. On May 9th 1950, Schuman proposed a political collaboration between the European states, which later lead to the creation of the EU.
IV-The Anthem
The “Ode to joy” by Beethoven is the official anthem of the EU and is played at the start of a new Parliament following elections and at formal sittings. As there are many different languages in Europe, it is a instrumental version.
V-The Motto
“United in diversity” was adopted as the European Union motto on May 4th 2000 after a contest. It signifies how Europeans have come together to work for peace and prosperity. At the same time, it symbolizes how the EU was enriched by the continent's different cultures, traditions and languages.
